About Love & Hip Hop Miami

The central conflict of Love & Hip Hop: Miami is the fight of many rappers, singers, and socialites in Miami’s music scene. The show is famous for its eclectic cast, which captures the racial and socioeconomic diversity of Miami. It contains a large supporting cast, most of whom get the same amount of screen time and attention from the plot as the main characters.

Trina, Trick Daddy, Gunplay, Amara La Negra, Veronica Vega, Bobby Lytes, an openly homosexual rapper, Prince, a socialite and party producer, and Shay Johnson from Flavor of Love made up the original cast.

The supporting cast for the first season would include Steph Lecor, Latin trap producer Young Hollywood, Keyara Stone, an urban model and Gunplay’s girlfriend, Pleasure P, a Grammy Award nominee, and his Pretty Ricky bandmate Baby Blue Whoaaaa, a former stripper turned rapper named Miami Tip, Joy Young, Trick Daddy’s estranged wife, celebrity stylist Jojo Zarur, Jeffrey White, JT Money’s openly gay son and Bobby Lytes’ boyfriend, Malik.

Both Jojo’s mother Faride Nemer and Amara’s mother Mami Ana will play minor supporting parts despite not being listed in the original cast release. Juju C. from Love & Hip Hop: New York and Lil Scrappy from Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta would make special crossover appearances.

Nearly the entire cast of the show will return for a second season, with Jojo elevated to the main cast, VH1 announced on November 19, 2018. Spectacular Pretty Ricky, rapper Khaotic, and Haitian-American comedian Jessie Woo will all join the supporting ensemble as new actors. Khaotic garnered media attention while the show was being filmed because of an alleged hit-and-run incident.

Jojo Zarur made the announcement that the show would return on January 6, 2020 on November 15, 2019. The season’s premiere date was announced by VH1 on December 9, 2019, along with a promo that featured the show’s new cast members Sukihana, Brisco, Hood Brat, and waist trainer entrepreneur PreMadonna. PreMadonna had been a part of the show since it first began filming in 2016.

Jojo would return in a supporting capacity, while Veronica Vega would completely leave the show. Although they were listed as cast members in the press announcement for the season, Prince, Gunplay, and Baby Blue Whoaaa, Pleasure P, and Spectacular of Pretty Ricky were not included when it actually went on show.

On December 11, 2019, VH1 revealed that Joseline Hernandez from Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta would be returning to the franchise. She would join the cast alongside Shay Johnson’s brother EmJay Johnson and model Nikki Natural, while rapper KaMillion and social media personality Saucy Santana, who is best known for his friendship with Yung Miami of City Girls, would make recurring guest appearances.

Ratings of the Love & Hip Hop Miami

With 1.8 million viewers, the series premiere was VH1’s most successful premiere since Hip Hop Squares the year before. Overall, the show’s ratings have been lower than those of its predecessors, which has been blamed on its confusing scheduling decisions. In season two, it was aired in a number of different time slots before settling on Monday nights after Love & Hip Hop: New York.

Critical Response to the Show

Ebony applauded the programme and Afro-Latina star Amara La Negra for “inviting cultural debates” around misogynoir and the underrepresentation of black Latinas in popular culture, and expressed hope that the franchise will continue to go in a more “conscious” path.

After signing a multi-album record contract with BMG within hours after the show’s debut, La Negra was hailed by Billboard as the “breakout star” of the series. Some Miami residents, including Khia and TS Madison, gave the show a poor review on their web show The Queen’s Court, comparing it to a “telemundo,” criticising the casting, and saying that “they had everything terrible but a bad bitch on there.”
