What is Love and Hip Hop New York?
Love & Hip Hop: New York is a reality television series broadcast on VH1. Here private and professional lives of diverse hip-hop and R&B musicians, performers, managers, and record producers who live in different American cities.
The production is well known for its massive ensemble, consisting of approximately 250 cast members. Numerous of them are well-known figures in hip-hop culture.
The franchise has been criticized for seeming to have invented a large portion of its plot since it originally aired and for having a tendency toward a narrative pattern more commonly seen in scripted genres like soap operas. Still, it’s a brand that has garnered some of the highest ratings in the history of cable television and is frequently referred to as a guilty pleasure.
The ability of Love and Hip Hop to float between reality and heightened fantasy with a mixture of unscripted and stage moments based on the real drama in the musicians’ lives is at the core of the show’s guilty-pleasure appeal; which is already playing out on social media.
Love and Hip Hop New York History
Jim Jones, a rapper, approached VH1 executives in 2006 about producing a reality show about him. Keeping Up with the Joneses, featuring his girlfriend, Chrissy Lampkin, and him, an 11-minute presentation tape, was created by Stefan Springman and Toby Barraud of NFGTV under the direction of Jim Ackerman, senior vice president of development and production at the time. However, VH1 was concerned that viewers would remain interested in the idea full-time.
Yandy Smith, Jones’ manager, tweaked the concept and made it a female ensemble-driven reality show by introducing Chrissy Lampkin and her circle of friends. Under the title ‘Diary of a Hip Hop Girlfriend,’ the series was first introduced in VH1’s programming planning report in April 2010.
First Release of Love and Hip Hop New York Session 1
On January 4, 2011, VH1 announced that Love & Hip Hop was set for release on March 6. The eight-episode first season of the show would include Chrissy, Jim Jones and his mother Nancy, Olivia Longott and her manager Rich Dollaz, Mashonda Tifrere, the ex-wife of Swizz Beatz, and stylist Emily Bustamante, the mother of Fabolous. Later, to accommodate the first season reunion, which was broadcast on May 16, 2011, the first season was extended to nine episodes.
The New York Times’s Jon Caramanica commended the show’s dissection of rappers’ public personas as well as its high production qualities, which included “slick, stunning pictures of the women driving amazing vehicles with no men in sight.”
He did, however, criticize the “needless filler drama, “which was echoed by other reviewers who believed the “endless catty disputes and trashy conduct” took away from the show’s theme and made it too similar to The Real Housewives franchise.

Michelle. This garnered huge media attention, further promoting the viewership.

New York’s fourth season included a problematic love triangle between rapper Peter Gunz, his wife, singer Amina Buddafly, and Tara Wallace, the mother of their child (similar to the more well-known Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta). The show’s ratings considerably improved, rising 54% over the average of the prior season and drawing an average of 3 million viewers every episode.
With over 10 seasons, the show continued to experience great success. In 2017-2019, the show started to experience weeks’ worth of low ratings. Beyond that, production changes were introduced. On October 8, 2020, Mona Scott-Young confirmed that VH1 was working on an internal production of the brand. On December 3, 2020, it was revealed that two new spin-offs, one involving couples from the franchise’s history and the other including cast members from Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, Hollywood, and Miami living together in an Arizona hotel, were in production and would debut in 2021.
